Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of structuring and writing content so that generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity and Claude choose to summarize, cite or quote it. What Generative Engine Optimization actually means
SEO optimizes for a ranked list of blue links. GEO optimizes for something different: being the source a generative AI system draws from, paraphrases, or names, inside a single synthesized answer. The searcher may never click through to your page at all. Instead, the AI system reads your content, decides it's a trustworthy and relevant source, and folds a version of it into its own response, sometimes with a citation link, sometimes without.
That shift changes what 'ranking' even means. A page can be the single source behind an AI Overview or a ChatGPT answer without ever appearing as a clickable result the way a traditional search snippet does. GEO is the set of practices, technical and editorial, that make a page more likely to be selected as that source.

GEO vs SEO: what actually changes
Most of classic SEO still applies and still matters: fast pages, clear headings, real expertise, working links. GEO adds a layer on top of that foundation rather than replacing it. Three things matter more under GEO than under traditional SEO:
- Extractable structure. A generative system has to lift a self-contained chunk of your content, often a paragraph or a list, and use it directly. Content that only makes sense in the context of the surrounding page is harder to extract cleanly than a clearly scoped answer to a clearly scoped question.
- Explicit entity signals. Schema.org markup, especially Organization and WebSite blocks, helps an AI system understand who is publishing the content and whether that source is credible, separate from the content's ranking signals.
- Crawler-level access. None of the above matters if GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot is blocked at the robots.txt level. This is the single most common, and most invisible, GEO failure, because it produces no visible error on the page itself.

GEO SEO: how the two disciplines fit together in practice
In practice, most teams don't run a separate 'GEO team' from their SEO team, and they shouldn't. The technical checklist above overlaps almost entirely with technical SEO best practice: valid schema, a real sitemap, no accidental noindex tags, clean information architecture. The genuinely new work is narrower: publishing an llms.txt file, auditing AI-bot access specifically (since it's a different set of user-agents than search engine crawlers), and, on the content side, occasionally restructuring a page's opening paragraphs to directly answer the question its H1 implies, rather than building up to the answer gradually.
If you're deciding where to spend the next hour on this, technical access (robots.txt, indexability, llms.txt) has a much higher ceiling than content rewrites, because a single robots.txt line can flip a page from completely invisible to fully crawlable, while content rewrites produce smaller, more gradual gains.
